Guide — Care & Durability

Caring for a moss wall: Why it’s there’s nothing to look after.

The question we’re asked most often at our advice centre is also the one we answer most quickly: What can I expect after my purchase? The honest answer — almost nothing. This guide explains why that’s the case, where the real limits lie, and what ‘100% maintenance-free’ actually means in everyday life.

Moss wall care — a maintenance-free Moss wall in the living room that requires no watering or light
The short answer

A preserved Moss wall requires no watering, no light, no fertilising and no pruning — she no longer has a metabolism. The only advice: Dusting — after five years at the earliest, then use a feather duster or a hairdryer on the cold setting. There are no maintenance contracts, no ongoing costs and no technology that can break down — but there is a lifetime guarantee on the moss.

The Why

Three reasons why care Not applicable

1

The moss is no longer alive — it remains

During the preservation process, the plant’s natural sap is replaced by a preservative solution made from 100% natural substances. There is no longer any metabolic activity — and therefore nothing that requires water, light or nutrients.

2

The colour is in the material, not on it

With Druckpräparation+, the moss is dyed right through (deep dyeing) rather than just treated on the surface. This means nothing fades to the point where it needs refreshing — which is the basis of our lifetime guarantee.

3

Dust doesn’t stick

Preserved moss has an antistatic effect and repels dust. There are no flowers, no pollen, no soil — and therefore nothing that falls off or grows back.

Maintenance-free moss wall in the bathroom — high humidity keeps the moss soft, without the need for watering
Practical evidence

Even where plants would fail

Windowless corridors, bathrooms, underground car park reception areas: preserved moss has been hanging for years in places where no living wall could survive — without a single bit of maintenance. High humidity is not an enemy here, but a friend: it keeps the moss particularly soft and easy to grip. The Comparison Guide.

The honest boundaries

Three things that the moss doesn’t like

‘100% maintenance-free’ does not mean ‘indestructible’. To ensure that the lifetime guarantee delivers on its promise, there are three points that must be included in any honest plan:

Pure water

Bathrooms and saunas are fine, provided they are properly ventilated — high humidity actually keeps the moss particularly soft. It just doesn’t like being sprayed directly with water: moss doesn’t belong in the shower.

Blazing sunshine — only a concern for flowers

The moss itself is 100% light-resistant — for decades, even on a south-facing window. Only preserved plants and flowers (such as those in floral and jungle walls) should not be left hanging in direct sunlight for long periods.

Continuous friction

Touching is expressly permitted and part of the experience — the only thing the planning should avoid is constant rubbing in the same spot (such as near door handles).

Frequently asked questions Care instructions

How do I look after a Moss wall?

Not at all — in the literal sense: no watering, no light, no fertilising, no pruning. Preserved moss no longer has a metabolism. The only recommendation: dusting — and that won’t be necessary for at least five years; when the time comes, a feather duster or a hairdryer set to a cool, low setting from a distance of about 30 cm will suffice.

Do I need to spray or moisten the moss?

No. Contrary to what is often assumed, preserved moss does not need to be watered — not even by spraying. In very dry, heated air (below ~40% humidity), the moss may feel firmer; this is normal and does not cause any damage. As the humidity rises, it will soften again on its own.

How long does a Moss wall last without any maintenance?

Permanent — we offer a lifetime guarantee on the moss. The deep dyeing process used in ‘Druckpräparation+’ prevents the fading that occurs in surface-dyed products after just a few years. The difference is explained by the Encyclopaedia of Mosses.

How do Moss Pictures differ from Moss Walls?

Nothing — Moss Pictures are simply the same material in a frame. The same applies here: do not dust them for at least five years. The following shows the sizes available for dispatch: Online boutique.

Can moss go mouldy or attract pests?

No. Without soil, without moisture and without living tissue, mould and insects lack the conditions necessary for life. That is why preserved moss is also suitable for medical practices and people with allergies — no flowers, no pollen.

And what if something does get damaged?

In that case, we’ll replace the section, not the entire area. Individual sections of moss can be partially replaced — one of the advantages of the modular design. Please get in touch: personal advice.
