Since 1989: The full story — even the difficult chapters.
From the artificial flower business in our family home in Sohland, through bankruptcy, a fresh start in Latvia and the invention of our own deep-dyeing process — right up to the princely coat of arms for Monaco. If you want to know who you’re working with, take a look at where we’ve come from. Transparent, honest, comprehensive.
1989

Foundation of the company
Frank and Ingrid Bergermann set up ‘Oberlausitzer Kunstblumenhandwerk’ — the production facility is their private family home in Sohland.
The first job
The Freiberg Hat Factory places an order for bouquets worth 10,000 East German marks — exported from Sohland to Russia. Further orders follow.
1990–1991
A new direction following the fall of the Berlin Wall
All customers settle their accounts in Deutschmarks. The turning point: a Hamburg-based importer starts trading in artificial flowers — the goods are in high demand.
New ‘Lakowa’ production facility
Wholesale of textile flowers, table centrepieces for hotels and restaurants, the first Easter range, and artificial Christmas trees.
Purchase of a factory building
In 1991, the ‘Gebrüder Augst Weaving Mill’ in Wehrsdorf was purchased and refurbished — a collection service and large-scale decorations were added to the range of services.
Expansion of the product range
Ribbons, vases, potted plants, Christmas decorations — we supply restaurants, hotels and clinics.
1991–1993

Foundation of Bergermann Floristik
Ingrid and Frank Bergermann founded ‘Bergermann Floristik’ in Wehrsdorf in 1991 — with around 15 staff.
Distribution of natural mats
A new production line for grave decorations for All Saints’ Day and Remembrance Sunday supplies specialist florists and decorators.
1994–1996
Economic challenges
Market saturation following German reunification, defaults totalling 500,000 Deutschmarks at a 17% interest rate — in 1996, the company was forced to file for insolvency. We are telling this story too, because it is part of our history.
A new beginning via Latvia
Frank Bergermann works in Latvia as the production manager of a sawmill and organises a team of 25 people to collect, dry and pack moss — the first lorry is bound for German nurseries.
1996–1999

A fresh start with renewed courage
In 1996, Andreas Bergermann re-established the company — his wages as a fitter were his only start-up capital. Business began to pick up again.
Strengthening the team
In 1998, Andreas and Uwe Bergermann joined the business as sales assistants; the main line of business remained the sale of grave decorations.
2000–2003

Selling the business to the next generation
Ingrid and Frank sell Bergermann Floristik to Andreas and Uwe. In Latvia, under Roman Naudins’s leadership, numerous jobs are created in the production of Iceland moss products — marking the beginning of a long-standing friendship between the two families.
Company growth
Efficient order processing directly from the supplier avoids the need for stockholding and seasonal fluctuations — the company is growing steadily.
2004–2006

Move to ESGO Oppach
A permanent site for the first time: over 1,000 m² of storage and production space — until then, the company had been moving every year.
From supplier to in-house producer
The main supplier raises its prices by 35% — the solution: a new manufacturer producing exclusively for the company, which is taken over within two years.
Second production facility + direct import
In 2006, the first series production began in Kubschütz; at the same time, direct imports from Africa, India, China and Thailand commenced, with operations expanded in Turkey, amongst other places.
2007–2009

Establishment of production facilities in Latvia
In 2007, the company established its own production facility in Latvia — as the sole supplier of purified, dried Iceland moss of the highest quality, the company set new standards. The search for new moss fields took them as far as Murmansk — a development that would only bear fruit years later with MOOSMOOS.
Business is booming
In 2008/2009, the entire production operation moved to Oppach, to the ESGO premises; single flowers, dried flower arrangements and wickerwork were added to the range. By the end of the 2000s, business was going so well that the company had built up reserves.
2010

Flood disaster in Oppach
In August 2010, shortly before the main delivery, the warehouse was submerged under a metre of water — many of the goods that had been produced and already sold were lost. Family, friends and partner companies helped with the clean-up for weeks on end.
Carrying on despite the losses
A quarter of a million euros in savings has been lost, and the consequences will be felt for years to come — yet they are not giving up. That, too, is part of this story.
2011–2013

Entry into the Turkish market & a trip to Africa
In 2011, a small team set up their own production facility in Turkey; during an extended trip to Africa, they began importing directly from producers.
The Nature Parts Box
Innovative, customer-friendly packaging is becoming the hallmark of Bergermann Floristik.
In-house dyeing and waxing facility
In 2012, the company established its own dyeing and waxing workshop — the foundation for the highest quality and individuality in finishing.
Lydia Förster’s debut & the construction of the hall
Lydia Förster took over as head of purchasing in 2012 (and as head of production at MOOSMOOS in 2017); in 2013, the warehouse and administration departments moved into the newly built 3,000 m² premises.
2014–2016

Development of our own dyed mosses
The dyed mosses available on the market did not meet the required standards — following intensive development, in 2016 the company launched its own preparation and dyeing process: mosses of perfect quality and durability. This marked the birth of today’s deep-dyeing process.
‘Oppach Advent’ brand
The Advent and Christmas sales season frees the company from reliance on seasonal revenue.
A new generation
On 14 October 2014, Ben-Vito, the son of Lydia and Andreas Bergermann, was born — and with him came hope for the future of the family business.
Stabilisation of the business
Production is being expanded to maintain competitiveness — the sites in Latvia manufacture Iceland moss components and natural coverings.
2017

The MOOSMOOS brand
With a team of 18 staff, marketing began under the MOOSMOOS brand. The vision, despite high prices and a lack of track record: to become the market leader.
First product & first clients
Moss panels made from Iceland moss on a flexible backing; sold with an eight-page leaflet, one panel in a cardboard box — and the ‘Amalia’ Iceland moss flake as the hallmark of every display.
The interlocking panels for Pole Moss & Bun Moss walls
Thanks to our in-house development, there are no longer any visible panel joints on the wall — a hallmark of our work to this day.
First Order & BNI
In July 2017, the first commission came in: a 4-m² iceland moss wall for a kitchen showroom in Bautzen. Further commissions followed through the BNI business network.
2018

First trade fair & sample case
At the 28th HAUS trade fair in Dresden, MOOSMOOS is presenting its full range of moss varieties in the new sample case for the first time.
The first major project
March 2018 saw a breakthrough: a 60-m² Pole Moss & Bun Moss wall for the lobby of the 5-star Amonti & Lunaris Hotel in South Tyrol — featured in the trade journal ‘Wellhotel’.
Permanent installation team
Alf Rößler and his team are joining us as installation partners — quality and customer satisfaction are guaranteed for every MOOSMOOS installation.
First catalogue & total focus
The first MOOSMOOS catalogue is published; Moos is combined with preserved plants to create a jungle-inspired look. The entire production and warehousing operations switch to MOOSMOOS.
2019–2020

Online presence & configurator
moosmoos.de goes live, followed by the first Moss picture configurator on the market — a new era of customer interaction.
Raw Materials Expansion & Market Leadership
Own production facilities in Siberia, Eastern and Southern Europe. In 2019, MOOSMOOS is the only company that collects, cleans, dyes, preserves and processes moss — the vision of market leadership is becoming a reality.
Record & Expansion
In April 2020, the highest daily turnover to date was recorded: €188,820.75 net. The head office in Oppach is undergoing extensive modernisation — open-plan office, reception area, digitalisation, and many new staff members.
First overseas installation & farewell
In December 2020, the team installed 180 m² of moss and plant walls in the future showroom ‘The Circle’ in Santa Ponça, Mallorca. That same year, production manager Heike Schmidt — the heart and soul of the company — passed away after a long illness. We will never forget her.
2021
An upturn despite the coronavirus
More people are customising their homes, and architects are exploring new trends: a sharp rise in turnover, production running at full capacity, and new staff. Uwe Bergermann is leaving the company by mutual agreement — Andreas Bergermann becomes the sole managing director.
First TV report
In August 2021, ‘Galileo: World of Wonders’ will broadcast the first television feature on MOOSMOOS — ‘Works of Art Made from Moss: Unique Eye-catchers’ takes a look behind the scenes at the manufactory.
2022

Modernisation & Two-Shift System
Semi-automatic sizing lines and upgraded drying systems in the dye works are boosting capacity and quality; production is switching to a two-shift system.
Major contract for a royal family
Several moss walls and ceilings made from jungle moss, worth more than a month’s turnover — a project that will go down in the company’s history.
New management structure
Andreas Bergermann is focusing on innovation and marketing, whilst Lydia Förster is taking over the day-to-day management of the company.
Visit by Minister of State Martin Dulig
On 7 September, Saxony’s Minister for Economic Affairs visited the manufactory as part of his tour of the “pioneers of the Saxon economy” — the Moss picture presented to him now hangs in the State Chancellery.
MOOSMOOS Wine
A family holiday in Mallorca led to a collaboration with an artisanal winery — three hand-selected wines under our own label.
2023

MOOSMOOS Greenovation
After four years of intensive research, the world’s first maintenance-free moss-based façade greening system has been launched — creating a green microclimate for towns and buildings, combating heat islands, and promoting rainwater retention and air quality.
The idea behind HeavensBreeze
Development of a new product is underway: an app-controlled air filter containing Iceland moss, which purifies and conditions indoor air and maintains a stable level of humidity. The first prototypes are being manufactured and put through rigorous testing.
Charity Cannonball in Mallorca
In September, MOOSMOOS will take part in the first Charity Cannonball in Port Adriano — the proceeds will go to two children’s charity projects in Austria and Mallorca.
The company is growing
The support team and international sales department are being expanded — by the end of 2023, there will be 69 staff members working in production, administration, marketing and sales.
2024

German Design Award
In January, Greenovation will be presented with the German Design Award 2024 — in the ‘Excellent Architecture – Eco Design’ category.
First Greenovation project
In February, the team installed the first Greenovation wall open to the public at an altitude of 1,500 metres in the Hochkössen ski resort; in June, the first wall is installed on a block of flats in Euskirchen — the *Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger* runs the headline: ‘Nothing happens without moss’.
Launch of the MOOSMOOS Vision app
After two years of development, the Vision app is now available: artificial intelligence visualises Moss walls and ceilings in true-to-life photo quality — right in your own room.
Two ranges, one standard
In response to the competition, a high-quality sustainability range is being launched alongside the premium range — customers will now be able to choose between the two.
Sponsorship: Elisabeth Kappaurer
MOOSMOOS is to sponsor the Austrian professional skier — with a branded green ‘Mooshelm’ at all competitions.
35 years — the comprehensive chronicle
To mark the company’s anniversary, the new ‘Gold of Green’ corporate identity has been launched, along with a comprehensive timeline of the company’s history, which is further detailed on this page.
2025

The MOOSMOOS Art Car Tour gets underway
A Lamborghini Urus Performante, embellished with real moss flakes, is travelling as a work of art on wheels from Germany via Austria, Italy, Monaco and France to Mallorca — an initiative by Andreas Bergermann. Every moss flake purchased supports charitable projects close to our hearts; the 25/26 Tour promotes the greening of our cities across Europe. About the Art Car Tour.
A coat of arms for Monaco
To mark Prince Albert II’s 20th anniversary on the throne, the manufactory is crafting the royal coat of arms from ball moss and Iceland moss — to be unveiled at a ceremony during the Club Allemand International’s summer gala.
Reorganisation of the internal company structure
Reorganisation and technical overhaul: refurbishment of the warehouses, setting up new server infrastructures and modernising workstations with the latest software and technology — the foundation for the next phase.
2026

HeavensBreeze is nearing completion
By the end of 2025 / early 2026, the concept will be complete: a technical device featuring real moss, app integration and an internet connection. Behind it lie years of development — software development, website presence, apps, materials, packaging and all technical aspects, all provided under one roof.
