A new eye-catcher is drawing attention in Euskirchen: A moss facade on the multi-family house currently under construction between Wehbach and Wilhelmstraße is attracting attention. “The visual axis from Europaplatz to Wilhelmstraße, and thus the view into the city center, is becoming greener,” states Bergermann Floristik GmbH.
Euskirchen: Moss on Buildings Provides Cooling and Sound Reduction
The special feature: According to the company, the moss wall is maintenance-free. It requires neither maintenance nor watering. At the same time, it enhances well-being, regulates humidity, and provides remarkable sound insulation. The mosses used are prepared to absorb humidity and rain – up to 8 liters per square meter.
When exposed to heat and sunlight, the stored water evaporates, thus creating evaporative cooling. This contributes to a better microclimate around the building. Furthermore, measurements have shown that sound is reduced by approximately 30%.
New Building in Euskirchen: 16 of 18 Apartments Subsidized
The inventor and manufacturer of this innovative moss facade is the company Moosmoos in Oppach, as further reported by Bergermann Floristik. Since 2016, the manufacturer has been developing natural, sustainable interior elements for hotels, restaurants, offices, and private buildings. Moss on buildings has been in use since 2008. Further projects in Germany and Austria are planned for 2024.
The team collects the green raw materials in its own forests throughout Europe, as stated in the announcement. In the forest and later in the manufacturing facility, the moss is cleaned by hand and freed from pine needles. Specialists process the moss gently and entirely according to customer requirements. The new building, constructed by the non-profit Euskirchener Baugesellschaft, is scheduled to be occupied by tenants on November 1. Of the 18 apartments, 16 are subsidized social housing units.
