Iceland moss is a shrub lichen that grows in a cushion shape. It is a close community of forest fungi and algae. Nevertheless, many synonyms are used such as Icelandic moss, Irish moss, reindeer moss or fever moss. It is a rigid, scaly and antler-like branched plant.
Iceland moss can grow to a size of 4 to 15 cm. The plant is known for its healing properties. You may know them from the pharmacy.

Icelandic moss was originally discovered by Icelanders as a medicinal herb and used to treat respiratory diseases such as hoarseness and coughs as well as inflammation of the mouth. It has also been used just as successfully for chronic pneumonia or bronchitis. The lichen acids in Iceland moss have an antibiotic effect and are therefore soothing and pain-relieving. The medicinal plant can be administered in the form of teas, tinctures or tablets.

The spherical moss processed by Moos-Moos Manufaktur comes from our own European forests. Collecting ball moss is more like “looking for mushrooms”. It is mainly found in mixed forests that offer optimum humidity and often hides under needles and leaves.

The beautiful ball moss or also called cushion moss, must be collected sustainably and gently. This is allowed only in private forests. For this reason, only specially trained employees are permitted to carry out this task. A maximum of 20-30% of the ball moss found may be harvested so that it can grow back sufficiently and nature is spared. We use our checkerboard principle for this, whereby only the white areas are harvested in order to find a closed moss cover again in the future and to protect the environment.

Then opt for a wall covering of plant moss and jungle moss made from a combination of ball moss and scattered ferns, grasses, eucalypthus and other foliage such as clover seed, cypergrus or foxtail. Additional accents can be created using bark, branches or stones.
